RECIPROCAL LINKS
The Advantages and Disadvantages

ADVANTAGES OF RECIPROCAL LINKS:

* Cost effective advertising for your business.

* Great for marketing and continual business.

* Gives you more control of where target market is coming from.

* Links are fast becoming one of the top avenues in showing your targeted market how to find your web site for products and services.

* By increasing your targeted traffic, links continue to supply and provide you with residual profits.

DISADVANTAGES OF RECIPROCAL LINKS:

* Time consuming.

* Requires extensive legwork (particularly if you do not have a Webmaster or Trafficmaster).

* Most high traffic sites will not participate in reciprocal linking.

* Other sites may accuse you of spamming when you request to reciprocate links.

* Many sites now require the completion of lengthy link application forms.

* Requires follow up.

Effective web site promotion methods help increase the traffic to your site!  Also, knowing who links to your site, and increasing the number of links, is an important part of any web site promotion effort.

Search engines are used by approximately 83% of all online users.  Most find less than 30% of available Internet sites.  This means more than 70% of all Internet resources are not found through the search engine.  That's worth thinking about; and it raises this question:  "If people can't find resources through search engines and directories, how do they find them and where do they look?  The answer is again, through reciprocal links!  Links from other sites make up about 80% of the hits a web site gets, clearly showing that this form of promotion gets the most traffic to your site!

Link popularity is the total number of web sites that link to your site.  Because good link popularity can dramatically increase traffic to your web site, well placed links are an excellent source of consistent and targeted traffic.  And due to recent developments, they can even generate additional search engine traffic to your site.  Many of the major search engines now factor "Link Popularity" into their relevance algorithms.  As a result, trading links with high-traffic web sites will improve your search engine rankings!  Infoseek, AltaVista, Excite, and WebCrawler, to name a few, all use link popularity in their formulas for ranking your site.

If you've tried other marketing techniques with less than optimal results, try this under-emphasized method of promoting your site.  You will be surprised at how much traffic you can create by establishing reciprocal links with businesses in your industry and even your competitors!  You can't lose!
